Chaldean community rallies for refugees WEST BLOOMFIELD — The Chaldean American Ladies of Charity hosted an evening to honor refugees new to the United States July 30 at Shenandoah Country Club, and the event included strong appeals to help improve the refugees’ lives. Organization works to ‘adopt’ refugee families from Iraq War In an effort to support these families, the Chaldean Federation of America runs the Adopt-A-Refugee-Family Program, which was launched in September 2007. One-hundred percent of donations go to the families. Benefactors receive reassurance that their donations have made it to the families when they will receive receipts signed by the refugees and the Jesuits who deliver the money. In addition to the receipts, refugee families also will send postcards to the donors, thanking them for the money. Unlike other international help organizations, the Adopt-A-Refugee-Family Program doesn’t send food products that the family may have to sell on the black market if it needs other things such as medicine. “This is better than sending just food products,” said Adopt-A-Refugee-Family Chairman Basil Bacall. “If a person is truly in need, they will be spending the money on things that they need for their family, like medicine or doctor visits.” Refugees are identified by a committee of Jesuits, Chaldeans and Syriacs, then need is determined by a refugee application, which is based on 25 questions and reviewed by the Chaldean Federation of America. Donor participation has grown drastically since last September, when there were 10 to 15 families. In May, donors sent $25,600 to more than 200 refugee families. The program hopes to adopt 5,000 refugees by the end of 2008. Those wishing to adopt a refugee family can visit www.adoptarefugeefamily.com or call (248) 851-3023.
